Gene Stem Co., Ltd. is a university-launched venture company established in 2011 by Professor Nobuyuki Takakura of the department of Signal Transduction, RIMD, Osaka University to return the research results achieved at the university to society. The representative director of the company is Koji Kobayashi, and the director is Nobuyuki Takakura.

Business expansion is as follows:

  • 1: Cancer Stem Cell:
    We have identified cancer stem cells by using PSF1 promoter activity. In mammal, the precise function of PSF1 has not been clarified yet; however, in yeast, PSF1 makes GINS complex with PSF2, PSF3, and SLD5 and plays important roles in DNA replication. We offer monoclonal antibody (mAb) against PSF1 that possibly marks cancer stem cells in tumors originated from human and mouse. Moreover, we obtained mAbs against PSF3 and SLD5. PSF3 expression is elevated with malignancy of tumor and SLD5 can marks ES cells and probably teratoma stem cells. By using technology of visualization of cancer stem cells with PSF1 promoter activity, we offer screening method for identification of cancer stem cell drug.
  • 2: Blood vessel formation :
    We offer several methods to identify agents for suppression or induction of blood vessel formation. We also have several animal models associating with vascular diseases, such as cancer, retinopathy, inflammation, and so on and offer them for screening to develop candidate agents.
  • 3: Regeneration (Platelet):
    We have obtained methods to generate platelets from hematopoietic stem cells or megakaryocytes by using specific device. We are manufacturing machine for automatic platelet production and plan to offer the machine and platelets as standard used in coagulation examination in vitro.
    4: Development of new drugs: We try to develop a good remedy to maintain healthy blood vessels for protecting from aging and lifestyle related diseases and that to target cancer stem cells.
